As a family photographer in London it always feels very special to be part of significant family events. So I was thrilled when Patricia got in touch about photographing her daughter’s birthday celebrations. I was even more excited to hear that the party was at the Shangri-La Hotel in the Shard.
Patricia had hired a private room for the special birthday lunch for her family. It was going to be a fun gathering including her three daughters and five very cute grandchildren.
Views of London Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and so much more……
Having never been inside the Shard before it was really exciting to make my way up to the 34th floor. To say the view from up there is stunning is rather an understatement! From the huge window of their dining room the view across London was breath-taking. It was fantastic to see London Bridge crossing the River Thames. In particular St Paul’s Cathedral stood out amongst the wonderful London architecture.
Before the meal was served we did some family portraits. We photographed the whole family together as well as each smaller family group. Even though these are more formal portraits I still like to do them in as relaxed a manner as possible. This way we can capture the true nature of each family. From then on it was more documentary style photography of the family as they chatted over drinks in the bar, awaiting the delicious meal ahead. The children were particularly sweet to photograph. They were obviously delighted to be meeting up with their cousins again. It was lovely to see them playing with their new toy cars and their top trumps cards.
The family then made their way into the Li room to sit down for the birthday lunch. One of the granddaughters had designed lovely individual place settings. They were so colourful and creative and went down brilliantly with all the family members.
This lovely family couldn’t have made me feel more welcome. It was amazing to be part of such a special event. As I left them to enjoy their meal together I could hear the sound of laughter as I made my way to the lift. Arriving at the ground floor, it was back down to earth again for this London family photographer.
